If you had told me five years ago that I would be the podcast host of a global podcast, I wouldn’t have believed you. Five years ago, I had never even listened to a podcast. I was an author and a speaker doing what I thought I was meant to do.

But everything changed when I moved during the pandemic to care for my elderly parents. I had to cancel all of my in-person events to keep my parents safe, which led me to consider sharing on the Internet in some way.

If you’re a writer, podcasting will add to your platform as a new way to share the topic you’re writing about. So let’s talk about what you need to do to start a podcast.

  • Find a quiet space to record in. I converted an old closet into a podcast booth. I live in a farmhouse where there are not too many quiet places, and this works beautifully. I would suggest hanging curtains inside to soften the space.
  • Get a microphone. You can buy one that is not too expensive, but be sure to get something that will last.
  • Find a program to edit your podcast. Several free choices are available online. You also need to have a way to replay the times that you record yourself. I use my Mac laptop because it has GarageBand which gives me flexibility in the sound quality of my narration.
  • Choose a podcast platform. I use Buzzsprout and would highly recommend it.
  • Determine who your audience is. Just as when writing, it’s crucial that you know your audience. Once you figure out to whom you’re speaking, then speak your heart boldly.
  • Be consistent even if it means you have to prerecord episodes. If you’re going to put out a podcast every week, then you need to put out a podcast every week. The more consistent you are, the more followers you’re going to have. And the more focused you are on your message, the more people will listen.

Podcasting is a beautiful experience. If you end up doing interviews as I do, you will have a little more work, but it’s the most encouraging work helping your guests learn to share their stories. I love podcasting more now than writing. That is something I never thought I would say.

I recommend you give podcasting a try. You could love it, too!
